This delicious Italian bread makes a great meal and serves plenty of people; take it to your next party with marinara sauce for dipping.

  • Servings: This recipe makes two loaves

1½ lbs Ground Italian Mild Pork Sausage
2 Slightly Beaten Eggs
2 Green Bell Peppers
2 tsp Finely Chopped Basil
1 cup Fresh Parsley, chopped
3 Tbsp Olive Oil, to sautee pork
3 cloves Garlic, finely minced
1 Large Onion, chopped
2 cups Mozzarella Cheese
1 cup Parmigiana-romano Cheese
½ cup All-purpose Flour
2 lbs Pizza Dough, homemade or from your favorite pizzeria
2 cups Marinara
½ tsp Salt Optional
¼ tsp Pepper

Clean and remove stem and seeds of green bell peppers. Boil for five minutes to soften.

Remove from water, drain and let cool.

In a skillet, saute onion in olive oil until semi-transparent, add salt and garlic.

Wait a minute, then add sausage until completely browned, stirring occasionally.

While that's browning, slice green bell peppers.

Once sausage is browned, add peppers.

Once cooked, use slotted spoon to remove from pan and drain well in a colander.

Set 1 lb pizza dough on a lightly floured wooden board. Sprinkle the pizza dough lightly with flour and roll out into a 10 x 12 rectangle by 1/2 thick. Do not worry if the dough looks like an uneven rectangle when rolled, this is normal.

Place sausage mixture into a large pot or mixing bowl, add basil, parsley and eggs, mix well.

Spread 1/2 the mixture onto dough add 1/2 cup of Parmigiana-Romano cheese and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.

Fold in the 1 1/2 inch border of the dough and press down. Roll the dough into a jelly roll beginning with the shorter side. Once rolled, place the rolled dough seam side down on a lightly greased baking sheet.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Make the second bread the same way using the remaining mixture and cheeses and place on the same baking sheet leaving room for the bread to grow. Thoroughly mix 2 egg yolks to coat bread.

Using a small paring knife, slice top of bread on a diagonal - do not slice completely through, just slightly for appearance before placing in oven.

Use a pastry brush to brush outside of bread with egg yolks. Bake the breads for 40- 45 minutes, until they are crusty and brown.

Cool on wire rack.
